Punters Corner: Goals, goals and more goals!

After shaking off what was a frightfully unlucky Round 8, the lines have been cleaned and the amber nectar is flowing as we chase AFL exotics glory in Round 9.

Goals, goals and more goals is the theme of the round and it starts tonight in the west as the Eagles host the Demons – a big win to the Eagles could set up a great weekend so expect the pool bar to be pumping come final siren!

Like great dialogue in a Michael Bay movie, disposals value has been incredibly hard to find and some here at the front bar are arguing it is non-existent this week.

They have been put on waters and sentenced to 5 Shipping Steel’s on the jukebox for their Friday morning pessimism, but I must admit, I did find there was much better value about the goal scorers this round. Kick straight, lads!

Willie Rioli 3+ / 4+ Goals

No Jetta, no Hibberd, no Lewis for the Dees down back – Rioli is going to have a field day up forward in his return for the Eagles. Despite being on ‘managed minutes’ (whatever that means these days) Rioli has the class and goal sense and I doubt they will be playing him too high up the ground first up. I got 3 @ $7 and 4 @ $22 earlier this morning.

Jack Petruccelle 3+ / 4+ / 5+ Goals

At $8.50 for 3, $28.50 for 4 and $141 for 5 Goals, Flash is very much in play tonight. With so much focus likely to be on the twin pillars in Darling and Kennedy, these smaller Eagles forwards could have great nights out. I rarely scatter multiple players in the same game like this but this Demons backline is as depleted as it gets. I will not be surprised to see 120+ points kicked by West Coast here.

Josh Kennedy / Jack Darling 6 Goals

The spot is just too good to not have a piece of the two Eagles talls here. Getting JJK at $17's and Darling at $30's against a team that leaks goals to key forwards every week is just too hard to pass up. No value in starting less than six goals in my opinion, either one of them will smash or they won't.

Will Hayes 2+ / 3+ Goals

Nothing has changed my mind on Hayes despite him kicking just the one goal last week. His odds are amazingly good for a guy who loves sneaking down the fat side unmarked. The Dogs won’t be bombing long into this Cats defence, so the mandate could be hit the guy sneaking into the 40-50m line. $16 for 2 goals earlier, lazy 131-1 for 4 goals. Come on Maysy!

Rhys Stanley 2+ / 3+ Goals

When markets finally get a clue and add Stanley to the goal-scoring markets, I would be very interested to have a look at him for a few goals here. Expect they will want to give Fort a good stint in the ruck which will allow Stanley to rest forward as that second tall. With no Trengove at the back for the Dogs, Stanley will get an amazing matchup. Switch on bookies! Help us, help you! (if Stanley doesn't materialise in the markets or if his value is not there, I don't mind Dahlhaus for 2+ / 3+ Goals against the old firm at $6 / $22).

Brennan Cox 3+ / 4+ / 5+ Goals

At $14.25 for 3, $54 for 4 and a very juicy $250 for the michelle, Cox presents probably the best value of any forward this round. Matchups will prove key here but With Hooker taking Taberner and Hurley likely to go with Hogan, Cox should have a size and height advantage and if he does get Hurley, well, we all know that can be a fruitful place for a forward to find himself. Expect a Freo revenge game here and Cox will get his chances.

Jordan Dawson 2+ / 3+ / 4+ Goals

Some more juice here with Jordan Dawson at $6 for 2 goals, $23.50 for 3 goals and $140 for 4 goals. JD has multiple avenues to goal, can kick them on the run from outside or float into the 50 and take a big grab. The kid can clunk them and he is pretty clutch too in front of goal. Love the value!

Jono Ceglar 2+ / 3+ / 4+ Goals

The Tigers are stretched thin for key defenders which means Astbury can’t take both Lewis and Ceglar. Big Cegs kicked his 2 last week from just two marks inside 50 but with still no Roughy, no Wingard, there will be chances for him here not just when playing as a forward but when rucking against the inexperienced Soldo. At $6.75 for 2, $31 for 3 and $191 for 4 goals, looks well worth it.

Hedge

Cruelly denied sporting glory due to recurring shin splint complaints and an aversion to warm-up laps, Hedge now spends his days golfing, fishing the leaves out of the Club 20 pools and identifying value plays in PGA, AFL, AFLW and T20. All you really need to know about him is he's more than comfortable taking 3I off the tee on a Par 5, and more than capable of pulling driver off the deck second shot.
