Looking Back: The Seven Goal Quarter Slaughter

The Sydney Swans pulled off one hell of a comeback at GMHBA Stadium against Geelong, kicking seven goals in a wild fourth quarter that saw them impressively overrun the Cats and take home the four points.

It was also Sydney's third consecutive win at Geelong's home ground, after overcoming a 22-point third quarter deficit.  They became the first side since West Coast in 2006 to win at Geelong's home after trailing at half-time.

Josh Kennedy and Isaac Heeney led the way, with 11 clearances between them in the final quarter which saw them both dismantle the Cats. Kennedy had 13 of his 33 disposals in the quarter, and bounced back into form after a lean start to 2018.

Sydney also managed this with injuries to big men Lance Franklin, Sam Reid, Sam Naismith, Dean Towers and Lewis Melican, which forced them to play a bit smaller and more mobile.

Geelong's midfield trio of Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Mitch Duncan (in the absence of Gary Ablett Jr) were limited, and although they tallied 69 disposals and 14 clearances they were not nearly as damaging as they normally are.

Callum Sinclair controlled the ruck for the Swans and that allowed the Sydney midfielders to thrive, and it set the stage for an ultimately pivotal comeback and win for the Swans.
