Club 20 Houston Open: Six Golfers primed for a launch up the leaderboard

After a big result (222% POT!) in Vegas last week we’re looking to go back to back on the PGA Tour and ride on out of the Lonestar state with saddlebags stuffed full of cash!

The field at the Houston Open this week is pathetically weak but that may actually be an advantage with most betting markets, having no clue how to price such relative unknowns, forced to offer some value to punters.

With the NRL and NFL guys at Club 20 going so well we’ve been under pressure here at the Golf table to keep the winners coming, so after many hours of prep and a few too many jimmy cans yesterday, here’s our suite of bets for the Houston Open starting tonight.

Outright Market – Russell Henley EW @ 22.00

There are track specialists and then there’s this guy at this course. The stats are frightening, I’ve never seen anything like it. Last five years, Henley has finished T8 or better every single year (8th in 2019, Win in 2017 then T4, T5, T7 three years prior). He has made 6/6 cuts at this event and most importantly, he is having these finishes in relatively stacked fields.

Finau, Rose, Bryson, Fowler, Rahm, Cantlay, Kuchar, Scott – these are the names in the fields from previous years where Henley is dominating but this year, tonight, there is NO ONE here. At Over 20-1 Henley represents excellent value and last week at the Shriners he gained 7 strokes on the field with his irons which tells me he is gearing into form.

Outright Market – Scottie Scheffler EW @ 23.00

In terms of pure ball striking, Scheffler is in the top two in this field probably behind Stenson (but only just). His average round score prior to the weekend is 65.3. Yes, he has fallen apart twice on the weekend so far on the PGA Tour but in this field (again, the field strength cannot be overstated how weak it is) Scheffler is a live chance to win at great odds EVEN if he flails on the weekend.

He finds fairways off the tee and has great distance (a combo that is crucial this week) and his ball striking on approach is ranked #5 in this field. If he can get hot with the putter early Saturday and get some confidence, he will run away with this for his first win on tour.

Outright Market – Robby Shelton EW @ 61.00

Little bit bolder play with Shelton coming in at 60’s. Much lesser known than some of his Korn Ferry Tour graduates like Wolf, Morikawa, Scheffler etc, Shelton has just as much amateur pedigree who has made his first four cuts on tour this season.

His off the tee game is excellent (#11 in this field), the ball striking is solid (#21 in this field) and he can putt. He lost the putter last week (-2.6 on field putting) but prior to that his last three events were solid with the flatstick. From Alabama so should be used to the Bermuda greens here in Houston this week. He is capable of contending here at great odds in a weak field.

Outright Market – Tom Lewis EW @ 61.00

The Meatman threw this guy up for a T10 bet on the Club 20 Betting on Golf Podcast and when we started to dig into him, we struggled not to bet him outright. Lewis is currently ranked #58 in the world Golf rankings which means there might be two guys ranked higher than him in this field, maybe only Stenson.

Two weeks ago he was in Scotland contending at the Dunhill (T5) then flew straight to Vegas where an opening round 72 put him too far behind the cut line. A 68 on Friday saw him miss the weekend right on the number so that MC is not as horrible as it looks given the travel and the Friday finish. Lewis won the Korn Ferry Championship in August and he finished T11 at The Open in July. The recent form looks there and the class is certainly there in a field that’s sadly lacking it – looks a big misprice so we're in on the man named after Tom Watson this week.

T10 Market – Russell Henley, Scottie Scheffler @ 4.00

I expect these guys to contend on Sunday afternoon so when there’s 4s being offered to sneak into the top 10, I’m all over that. Henley has not finished higher than T8 in five years and whilst golf is very volatile, that record and this field combines to make a T10 here as safe as you can get this week.

3-Ball Multis – Going Full Canadian!

  • Cameron Tringale @ 2.00

  • Russell Henley @ 1.91

  • Scottie Scheffler @ 2.10

  • Doug Ghim @ 2.50

  • Robbie Shelton @ 3.00

We’re not mucking about with these 3-Ball’s, we’ve got a bank from last week and we’re pushing it in here with guys in great spots against relative spuds in R1. We’re taking every 2, 3 and 4 leg combo as well as the all-up five legger paying 60-1.

Whether you want to reduce your stake for this portion or dip into some of those winnings from last week is up to you, but these guys are all in great spots. Were it not for a flukish -6 from Phil Michelson last week in R1, we’d have landed a big 4-leg 3-Ball paying 45’s so we’re close to it I can smell it.

Hedge

Cruelly denied sporting glory due to recurring shin splint complaints and an aversion to warm-up laps, Hedge now spends his days golfing, fishing the leaves out of the Club 20 pools and identifying value plays in PGA, AFL, AFLW and T20. All you really need to know about him is he's more than comfortable taking 3I off the tee on a Par 5, and more than capable of pulling driver off the deck second shot.
