Streaks, Set Shots & Searing Hot Third Quarters

Winning streaks, career-best goalkicking efforts, third quarter blowouts, the fine margins between 8th and 9th on the ladder.

This is Data Road Trip - investigating the key data points and numbers that formed what we saw in the week that was in sports.

899 Career Goals

Buddy Franklin was left sitting on 899 career goals on Thursday Night in an epic battle with Mark Blicavs. He kicked four for the night but was kept kick-less in a final quarter where Geelong held on for the win.

But where does Buddy's career haul compare to the greats of the AFL?

23 Behinds

Geelong somehow won on Thursday Night against the Swans, despite kicking 8.23 in the process. They were horrid all night in front of goal, including 3.9 from set shots.

Back-to-Back Wins

Brisbane won consecutive games for the first time since 2015, as they swiftly thumped Carlton at the GABBA by 65 points on Saturday.

6 Goals

In their epic win on Saturday, Eric Hipwood kicked the most goals by a Lion since Dan Merrett bagged seven against GWS in 2012.

5 Wins In A Row

For the first time since 2015, Port Adelaide has won five in a row, going to 11-4 for the season as they dispatched St. Kilda by 36 points on Saturday Night.

What A Third Quarter

Hawthorn played one of the best quarters (and halves) any team has put together this season, scoring 7.4 to 0.1 in the third quarter as they blew away the Western Bulldogs. They finished the half 12.6 to 2.1 in a commanding display.

151 Fantasy Points

Luke Breust was outrageous on Saturday, kicking 6 goals, gathering 24 disposals, taking 8 marks and laying 7 tackles in the perfect modern small forward performance.

2.1%

That is all that separates North Melbourne in 9th and 8th placed Hawthorn on the ladder. With GWS only half a game behind them, it makes for an intriguing run-in to the Finals in September.
