Week 10 College Football Matches To Keep An Eye On

Week 10 of College football is here and there are 3 games you need to watch this week!

Houston Cougars' senior punter, Australian ice-cream salesman turned superboot, Dane Roy, dives into the week 10 College football matches to keep an eye on.

#6 University of Florida vs #8 University of Georgia

The first game is pretty much the SEC East decider. It’s between the #8 Georgia Bulldogs and the #6 Florida Gators. Georgia are 6-1 this season with their only loss coming by a missed FG in OT vs South Carolina. Florida are 7-1 this season and their loss came against a formidable LSU team a couple of weeks ago. This game looks set to be dominated by both of the defenses, with Georgia only giving up 10.6 points per game on average which puts them #5 in the nation. The Gators are equal 9th in the nation in team sacks with 29.

Georgia played in the wet last week vs Kentucky so their junior QB, Jake Fromm, didn’t really get going. He has 1406 yards and 9 TD so far this season. Junior RB D’Andre Swift had a day out last week scoring 2 TD and rushing for 179 yards. Swift has 752 rushing yards and 7 TD for the year.

For Florida, junior QB Kyle Trask hit some form throwing for 200 yards and 4 TDs last week vs South Carolina. Trask now has 14 TD for the season and 1391 total yards. Senior RB, Lamical Perine is leading the engine room for the Gators with 4 TD and 460 yards this season.

Look out for:

As many touchdowns as you can get, based on the stats and the fact its a rivalry game, this could be a low scoring affair.

Verdict:

Florida have had the luck of the draw with their schedule this year and have made the most of it, but I think it could be too much this week. Expect a fired-up Bulldogs team to take control of the SEC East after this game.

University of Washington vs #9 University of Utah

The next game to watch is what would have been a Top 25 match up a few weeks ago, but not this week. The #9 Utah Utes travel up to Washington to take on the Huskies. Utah are 7-1 this season with their only loss coming against USC by a touchdown back in September. The Huskies are 5-3 now after a close 4-point loss to #7 Oregon Ducks last game. Utah had a good win last week shutting out Cal 35-0 and are giving up an average of 10.3 points per game which puts them 4th in the nation in defense. Utah are equal first in the PAC12 South with USC, who happen to be the only team they have lost to.

Players to look out for in this game are the same ones you have been looking at in the past games that had these teams! They are clocks you can set your watch to. Utah senior QB Tyler Huntley and senior RB Zack Moss are leading this Utes team to quite possibly a championship. Huntley has thrown for 1778 yards and 10 TD this year while rushing for 3 TD, and Moss has been dominant in the backfield for the Utes, rushing for 728 yards and 10 TDs. For the Huskies its junior QB Jacob Eason and junior RB Salvon Ahmed again. Eason has accounted for 16 TD and 1981 yards in the air while Ahmed has rushed for 662 yards and 7 TD.

Look out for:

The Aussie punter battle between Ben Lennon of Utah and Joel Whitford of Washington. Lennon is averaging 39 yards per punt and over half of his punt have been downed in the 20. Whitford leads the PAC-12 in net punting with 44.5, it helps when he hasn’t kicked a touchback all season and has only 7 return yards.

Verdict:

This is the final hurdle of Utah’s season. They have 3 relatively straight forward games after this one. But one stumble here will cost them dearly. They need to keep in touch with USC to be any chance of winning the division. Washington are at home and that could help them get over the line, but they will need to change from how they have been playing of late, if they want to win here. Utah should get the win in a low scoring game.

#24 University of Memphis vs Southern Methodist University

The third must-see game of the weekend is in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). No experts predicted the AAC would be this good this year, but if you ask anyone in the AAC, you would have got a different answer. We have known that there are some really talented teams here, kind of makes sense as to why no real big teams want to schedule any of the AAC teams.

Anyway, I digress… onto the game between the #15 SMU Mustangs (aka Southern Methodist) and the #24 Memphis Tigers. With 15 wins and only 1 loss between these two teams, I couldn’t pass up this game. Even College Game Day are going to Memphis for this.

SMU are 8-0 this season and narrowly escaped the Houston Cougars by a FG last week. SMU are 6th in the nation in scoring, averaging 43 points per game. They are also handy on the other side of the ball. The Mustangs are 2nd in the nation in sacks with 36. Memphis are 7-1 this season with their only loss coming against Temple Owls by 2 points on October 12th (SMU beat Temple by 24 points a week later). Memphis are ranked 10th in the nation in scoring offense with 39.5 points per game

Players to look out for in this game:

Memphis:

Freshman RB Kenny Gainwell who is 7th in the nation in rushing yards with 979. Gainwell has 11 rushing TD and 3 receiving TD with 440 receiving yards. Junior QB Brady White has 2161 yards and 20 TD which puts him equal 10th in the nation and equal first in the AAC for TD thrown.

SMU:

Junior WR Reggie Robertson Jr has 803 yards this season which puts him at 8th in the nation, he also has 6 TDs. Junior QB Shane Buechele has similar stats to Brady White, 2325 yards and 20 TD which puts him also equal 10th in the nation and equal 1st in the AAC. Senior Safety for the Mustangs, Patrick Nelson has 9 solo sacks this season which ranks him 4th in the nation.

Verdict

This game is set to be a blockbuster. The winner of this game will all but secure the AAC West. Will be very interesting to see what happens.
